Mark Bittman is a well-known food writer for the New York Times and author of several cookbooks.  In this book Bittman discusses how the “Standard American Diet” (SAD) was impacting his health in negative ways.  His doctor suggested a vegan diet, so Bittman adjusted his eating so that he was eating a vegan diet for most of the day (before 6pm) and then eating animal proteins with dinner and an occasional dessert.  Bittman has been eating this way for the past six years and found that results have been worth writing a book about it.  He explains the vegan diet is simple, easy to understand sections and includes recipes and a meal plan for both before and after six. As a vegan (that is still learning how to cook) I appreciated the nutritional guidance and simple recipes (though some photos would have been nice).  I am excited to see more awareness of the health benefits of eating vegan increasing.  A good recommendation to readers (vegan or not) who enjoy Michael Pollan or Neal Barnard.

Appeal Notes (May contain spoilers):
Genre: Nonfiction, Veganism, Nutrition
Pacing: Leisurely
Character: Told from the Bittman’s experience and research.
Tone: Had a diet book feel, but still full of good info and recipes.

Comments:  A great introduction to eating a vegan diet (or a partially vegan diet).

Why I read this book: A bestselling book about veganism…this still beginner vegan could not resist.
